The difference between what a hotel and a resort offers has to do with the services they provide, their location, and the activities and amenities available on-site. A resort is usually spread out over more land compared to a hotel.
Considering the extra land, there are more activities for guests to partake in. Resorts also usually offer more on- and off-site freebies and discounts to guests. Although a hotel and resort seem similar, the reasons often differ for why guests choose to stay at one over the other.
Hotels Vs Motels
“Motel” came along much later, in 1925, according to Merriam-Webster. It blends the words “motor” and “hotel” and is meant to describe an establishment that provides some, but not necessarily all of the services associated with a hotel.
Motels, according to San Jose State University communications professor Andrew Wood, are an entirely American phenomenon: They originated as inns along the country’s first major motorways, offering rest to weary explorers and families on vacation.
Motel is a word derived from the term “motorist’s hotel.” This was a term used to indicate when a hotel provided ample parking, a feature that is particularly useful to Americans and Canadians who frequently travel long distances on major highways and interstate systems. Initially, motel rooms had doors that faced the parking lot, making coming and going especially easy. Today, this may or may not be the case, as some motels now have inward-facing doors that connect to common areas.
Hotels and motels differ in layout and construction. Hotels can contain hundreds of rooms and several floors; they generally have staircases, elevators and internal corridors that lead to the rooms. Motels commonly have a one- or two-floor layout and guests access their rooms directly from the parking lot.
Some hotels, especially those in the luxury-accommodations realm, exhibit specific styles of architecture and design, such as the Waldorf Astoria of New York. Motels typically have a more utilitarian construction.
Hotels and motels employ varying types of workers. Hotels, for example, might have receptionists, concierges that offer advice and directions to local sites of interest, and bellhops that bring luggage to guest rooms. They also might employ chefs, housekeepers, parking valets, doormen and elevator operators. A manager, or several, might be on duty to supervise employees and help resolve problems.
Motels employ a comparatively small number of employees, typically receptionists and housekeepers. For very small motels, receptionists also might perform housekeeping and laundry duties.
In general, hotels offer a wider breadth of services. These might include room service, an on-site restaurant and cocktail lounge, laundry and on-site recreation and relaxation such as indoor swimming pools, exercise equipment and spa services, such as hot tubs and masseuse service. Some hotels double as resorts, offering their guests extensive entertainment options such as casinos and theatres.
Motels traditionally offer fewer services, but some have swimming pools and a complimentary light breakfast.
Travelers Versus Vacationers
People travelling from one place to another often stay at a hotel. It’s a temporary place to stay for a night that includes a bathroom and bed.
People on vacation often stay at a resort. This is complex that has a room with a bed and bathroom, but it also has many other things to offer vacationers. Resorts have garden, swimming pools, restaurants, and more. The rooms may not be as large at a resort because vacationers usually spend more time on the grounds of the resort rather than in their room.
The amenities and activities available on-site can vary greatly between a hotel and a resort. A hotel may have a small fitness room and a business centre, but not much else. There may be one eatery if any, but there will usually only be room service or vending machines available. A resort often has two or more restaurants or lounges in addition to room service. There may also be other activities or amenities available, including on-site music and dancing, sports such as golf or tennis, a large exercise room, a computer area, and even a spa.
It is thus understood that hotels are meant for short stays whereas resorts are meant for a little longer stay. A hotel stay can be long too at times depending upon the purpose of the stay and the visit. Generally, people do not prefer to stay for long in hotel rooms with their families. On the other hand, they prefer to stay for a long period of time in resorts.
Another important difference between a resort and a hotel is their location. Hotels are normally located in popular destinations such as near airports, railway stations of major cities and towns or in business areas or localities. Resorts on the other hand are located in the midst of natural and picturesque surroundings.
Hotels and motels also differ in price and often in the duration of stay for guests. Hotel accommodations commonly cost more, though the location is key; a four-star hotel in a small or mid-sized city might cost far less than a lesser motel in a more expensive area of the country, such as New York or Los Angeles. As for duration, hotels are built for longer stays; many are located in cities with attractions in walking distance and some, called extended-stay hotels, are built for guests who intend to stay for weeks or months.
Motels, by design, offer shorter-term accommodations: Many are located in remote areas and provide travelers with a place to sleep for a night or two. An exception would be a long-term motel guest — someone, perhaps, who lost a home to fire or is new in a particular city. He might live there for several weeks or months while arranging for a more permanent home.
